Russian Jewish Congress
The Russian Jewish Congress (RJC) is the largest secular Jewish organisation in Russia, representing the interests of the entire spectrum of Russian Jewry. The Presidium, the RJC’s governing body, includes individuals of whom the Jewish community and the whole country are proud: Nobel Prize laureate Vitaly Ginzburg, film director Yuly Gusman, lawyer Genry Reznik, first Vice Mayor of Moscow Vladimir Resin, successful entrepreneurs Mikhail Fridman and David Yakobashvili, ex-ministers Andrey Kozyrev and Yakov Urinson, and many other outstanding scientists, artists and businessmen.
The RJC is the leading Jewish charitable organisation operating in the CIS and Eastern Europe and has distributed tens of millions of dollars for its social, educational and cultural programmes. The aim of these programmes is to provide assistance to the elderly and low-income families, support sports and educational institutions, preserve and augment the scientific and cultural heritage, and revive religious and community life in all its diversity.
In 2005-2009 Viatcheslav Moshe Kantor was President of the Russian Jewish Congress.
Today the RJC is universally recognised as representing the Russian Jewish community in the country and abroad. The RJC’s activity in the international arena plays an important role in integrating Russia into the global community. Both non-governmental organisations and state agencies actively co-operate with the Congress, making it an effective channel for voicing the Jewish community’s position and strengthening tolerance and interethnic accord in Russia.
